LILACS: A PURPLE HAZE & PLANT PROPAGATION
Thursday, April 24, 2025
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
It’s spring! Lilac fragrance and flowers are just weeks away. Learn how to choose the best lilacs for your garden and how to care for them including pruning, propagating, and hybridizing. We’ll also look at insect and disease challenges, plus a bit of history.
The program will be presented by Jack Alexander from Heritage Museums and Gardens. He recently retired from his position as the Plant Propagator and “Lilac Guy” of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, a position he held for 40 years. Jack has introduced lilac cultivars, ‘Lilac Sunday’, ‘Purple Haze’, and ‘Foxey Lady’.
In addition, Master Gardener Thomas Norton will discuss the fundamentals of plant propagation for the home gardener to help demystify the process, and will cover perennial division using the bare root method. Each participant will go home with their own 4" pot of 'Atheline Wilbur' Lilac plus a variety of perennial & herbaceous cuttings to grow on.
Advance registration required. $20 fee includes materials
